Beginner's Guide To Gardening

SITE IT CORRECTLY.

As with real estate, starting a garden is all about location. Garden in an area of your yard that you'll see regularly (out of sight, out of mind definitely applies to gardening). In that case, you'll be more likely to spend time in it.

YOU SHOULD FOLLOW THE SUN.

First-time gardeners often misjudge sunlight. Before choosing a location for your garden, consider how the sunlight will play through your yard. Many vegetables, herbs, and fruits need at least six hours of sunlight in order to thrive.

 KEEP CLOSE TO THE WATER.

One of the best gardening tips you'll ever receive is to plan your new garden near a water source. Make sure you can run a hose to your garden site so you don't have to carry water to it each time your plants get thirsty. Plants need watered when a finger is pushed an inch deep into the soil (about one knuckle deep). If the soil is dry, water it.

PLANT THE RIGHT PLANTS.

It's important to select plants that will thrive in your growing conditions. Put sun-loving plants into a sunny spot, choose heat-tolerant plants in hot climates, and give ground-gobbling vines like pumpkins and melons elbow room (or a trellis to climb). Take your time to choose varieties that will thrive where you live and in the space you have.
